A fire piston is an incredible device capable of creating amazing heat. It consists of a hollow cylindrical container with an inward-fitting rod and tinder hole at its tip, all connected by an axle rod.
For optimal operation, the rod must be carefully installed in its cylinder and suitably lubricated to allow smooth movement within. A “gasket” of wound thread or leather can help seal off its interior surface from leakage.
Burned Piston
Burned pistons often appear melted and have a hole that looks as though someone tried to weld on it. Aluminum can only withstand so much heat before melting occurs and this occurs with aluminum pistons as well.
Detonation or pre-ignition are usually at the root of engine malfunction. Detonation happens when engine pressure and temperature surpass what an octane rating of fuel can handle, leading to overheated spots on piston tops that damage them; pre-ignition occurs when hot spots develop within combustion chambers which ignite air/fuel mixture before spark plug firing takes place.
Signs of a damaged piston regardless of its source can include excessive thick white smoke with an oil burning aroma from the exhaust, an engine running rough with squealing noises, or worse, hitting valves in the cylinder head resulting in what’s known as a “shattered piston”, an expensive repair bill for which can quickly add up.
Cracked Piston
The piston is a cylindrical piece of metal that moves back and forth within an engine cylinder, compressing air and harnessing combustion force created when fuel and air combine to power your car down the road. This energy is transferred via connecting rod to your crankshaft, powering the cam that controls engine’s cam shaft, empowering camshaft camshaft rotation, powering camshaft cams, powering engine camshaft cams, driving your cam, powering camshaft and eventually driving your vehicle onward.
Cracked pistons can cause serious damage to a vehicle, particularly near its oil ring groove. Cracking breaks the rigidity of the ring zone, leading to repeated impacts between piston skirt and cylinder wall which eventually cause them to fracture along their fracture line.
Cracked pistons can also diminish engine performance. Holes or cracks in them compromise the tight seal between piston and cylinder, leading to excessive friction and reduced oil levels in your engine – leading to decreased engine power as well as decreased acceleration when accelerating.
Melted Piston
Fire pistons (also referred to as fire syringe or slam rod fire starter) are an ancient fire-making tool commonly employed by survivalists and outdoor enthusiasts. Working like a diesel engine, these tools utilize extreme compression to heat tinder to create coal that can then be transferred onto larger mass of tinder for making fire.
Piston and cylinder must be perfectly matched, and often lubricated to reduce friction. Once plunged into the cylinder, it is important that immediately after plunging, you withdraw it immediately so as to not overheat and extinguish tinder.
Melting pistons are an indication of abnormal combustion, and could be due to many different issues: improper fuel delivery settings; stiff or wedged-in nozzle needles; lack of prewarming prioritization, or an exhaust gas system blockage all affecting airflow.
Scored Piston
Scoring occurs when oil film between piston and cylinder wall burns away or brushes away, signaling heavy friction between surfaces. Scoring can be easily identifiable due to discoloration on either surface. Scoring often causes irreparable damage that compromises both ends of a piston.
The photo above depicts an example of typical piston scoring patterns: exhaust side is damaged along with top near transfer port while intake remains relatively undamaged; heavy scoring marks also can be found near wrist pin hole which is known as four corner seizing.
Scoring and seizure are both final stages of damage that, left unchecked, can quickly turn into costly engine failures. By understanding their root causes and acting quickly to identify these problems before they worsen into major machine failures, you can save both time, money, and headaches by catching these issues before they escalate further. Acquaintance with types of scuffing, scoring and seizing will make recognizing such damage easier in future, which will allow you to identify these costly engine-destroying issues before they ruining your engine engine’s engines!
