Ceramic filters utilize a tight network of pores that filter water by means of adsorption and ion exchange, filtering out impurities and pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli and Shigella while also eliminating Giardia and Cryptosporidium cysts from entering.
Black Berkey purification elements are impregnated with silver to protect them from bacteria contamination when being cleaned or replaced, providing extra safeguards against accidental bacterial build-up when replacing or cleaning.
1. Efficient Filtration
Ceramic filters work on the principle of adsorption and microfiltration. Their outer shell is lined with millions of half-micron pores which trap impurities; once captured, these particles are then sent through an internal maze where their ionic charge can be neutralized by other molecules in its structure.
By keeping contaminants inside of a maze-like filtering system, contaminants are held securely inside. This results in incredible filtration results not achievable with other filtration methods.
Make sure that the Black Berkey elements are primed correctly by using a sponge, brush or plastic toothbrush under cool running water to scrub them with a sponge, brush or plastic toothbrush and water. A fully primed element should feel heavy and full of liquid when shaken – an indicator of full priming is when they feel weighty when shaken – Red Food Dye tests can also help determine if your filters have been adequately primed.
2. Removing Chlorine
THMs (Trihalomethanes), formed when chlorine travels from our water treatment plants to our faucets, pose serious health threats if not properly eliminated from our bodies by our immune systems.
Black Berkey water filters can effectively remove THMs and chlorine from your drinking water supply, along with pathogenic bacteria, viral cysts, chemicals such as fluoride (which has been demonstrated as an endocrine disruptor), sediments and more!
Black Berkey ceramic filter elements feature silver composites that significantly inhibit bacterial growth, eliminating the need for sterilization after cleaning. Furthermore, optional add-on PF-4 elements reduce MTBE, fluoride, lead and arsenic from your water, making this one of the best emergency water storage and filter systems on the market today.
3. Eliminating Bacteria
Black Berkey filters can effectively rid themselves of bacteria, cysts and micro-organisms that cause illness such as giardiasis, amoebiasis, intestinal infections and cryptosporidiosis. Furthermore, impurities present may lead to serious gastrointestinal conditions and life threatening illnesses like E coli.
Ceramic elements impregnated with silver make the surface bacteriostatic and prevent the growth of bacteria on filters, while their small amount does not leach into drinking water sources.
Black Berkey filters can remove harmful levels of arsenic from drinking water sources through natural processes or human activities, as well as eliminating Bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disrupting chemical used to manufacture plastic products such as water bottles.
4. Removing Minerals
Ceramic filters do not filter out minerals such as calcium and magnesium from water; instead they help reduce hardness by filtering out contaminants that contribute to it. Note, however, that ceramic filters will not remove fluoride so be sure to pair it with another filter specifically targeted to doing that task.
Black Berkey elements are more advanced ceramic filters, offering increased functionality. They are capable of eliminating pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites while extracting chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides and arsenic. Furthermore, Black Berkey elements reduce VOCs (volatile organic compounds), petroleum products rust silt sediment.
Black Berkey elements can remove hexavalent chromium (Chromate 6), a chemical which promotes stomach and intestinal cancer in humans. Furthermore, Glyphosate and MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether), both associated with health issues like bladder cancer have also been effectively eliminated through use of Black Berkey elements.
5. Restoring Fresh Taste
Ceramic water filters remove bacteria, chemicals and sediment for you to enjoy delicious tasting water. They also reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals – while adding a charcoal core can remove more toxins like lead, mercury and copper from your Berkey canister.
Black Berkey filters can endure thousands of gallons before they require cleaning. To clean them effectively, empty all filtered water before using a scouring pad in cool running water to scrub each side evenly for maximum effectiveness.
Follow your berkey manufacturer’s operational and maintenance instructions to maximize its efficiency. Use the Red Food Dye Test to confirm a properly primed berkey, while cleaning both its spigot and lower reservoir regularly with soapy water to extend its usefulness.
