Berkey water filter systems come in a range of sizes to meet the needs of different households and spaces. You should select the size most suited to you based on space considerations and family composition; larger systems can hold more water; each durable Black Berkey element can treat up to 11,350 liters before needing replacement.
Larger systems offer higher flow rates and can serve more people, so the chart below can help you select the ideal size system.
1. Big Berkey
The Big Berkey is the flagship system from Berkey and can accommodate from 1-4 people, making it perfect for everyday use and outdoor activities, and an essential asset in hostile environments where electricity, water pressure or treated water may not be readily available.
This gravity-fed filtration system is easy to assemble without the need for tools, plumbing or electricity – perfect for camping trips or travel abroad where municipal tap water may not always be reliable. Plus it’s portable! Take it with you when traveling abroad where access may be compromised.
The Big Berkey can be upgraded by adding more Black Berkey filters, each expected to filter 3000 gallons before needing replacement. Doing this will also increase its flow rate and capacity.
2. Travel Berkey
Regular visitors to this site know I’m an enthusiastic proponent of Berkey products, with their Travel model offering the ideal solution for various traveling situations – camping trips, vacation rental homes or business travel being ideal scenarios for its use.
It holds 5.7 liters and is designed for one to two people. The system comes equipped with two Black Berkey filters that are easy to clean and refill, filtering out viruses, pathogenic bacteria, cysts, heavy metals, toxins and chemicals while still leaving behind essential minerals your body needs for its wellbeing. Plus there’s even a sight glass built into the lower chamber so you can easily check how much water remains at the bottom.
3. Royal Berkey
Berkey water filter systems produce clean drinking water in any size or configuration; what determines their effectiveness is how much you will drink daily and when refilling the upper chamber.
Calculate this by multiplying (number of people using system) times 1.9 gallons daily usage; this will give you an approximate idea of the capacity needed by you and any guests using your system.
Each Black Berkey element can handle up to 3,000 gallons before needing replacement. If you anticipate serving more water per day than this amount, a larger model should be considered.
4. Imperial Berkey
The Imperial Berkey system holds up to 4.5 gallons of water, enough for daily usage by 4-8 people in a family unit. Additionally, its larger storage capacity ensures sufficient reserves during peak consumption periods such as meal times or outdoor activities like camping and picnicking.
It can be used anywhere there is clean drinking water and power available, including homes, offices, cottages or cottages, travel companions or disaster preparedness situations. When combined with fluoride/arsenic filters (PF-2), this unit can even address more serious water concerns for industrial, agricultural or medical uses.
5. Crown Berkey
Crown Berkey is an ideal solution for families, offering virus and pathogenic bacteria removal, cyst, parasite reduction, chemical contamination reduction and heavy metal reduction while leaving essential minerals intact for your body to use.
Larger systems hold more water and have higher flow rates than their smaller counterparts. Their taller columns produce greater pressure, enabling them to recover quicker after sustained or peak water usage. All systems may be outfitted with 2-8 Black Berkey Elements for peak flow rate control as well as Fluoride/Arsenic Reduction Elements to remove additional contaminants.
6. Berkey Light
Berkey water filter systems vary in terms of their dimensions and capacity, with larger systems holding more black berkey elements for filtering out herbicides, pesticides, VOC’s organic solvents radon 222 trihalomethanes heavy metals like lead and mercury.
Most people opt for the Imperial or Crown Berkey system to ensure a steady supply of clean drinking and cooking water, ideal for everyday needs like drinking and cooking. Portable models such as this one can even be taken on camping trips for convenient access to clean drinking water; in addition, their higher flow rate surpasses that of Travel or Go Berkey systems.
