Berkey Fluoride Water Filter: Features and Benefits

berkey fluoride water filter

Berkey fluoride water filters are an ideal choice for anyone looking to lower the amount of fluoride present in their drinking water supply. These filters employ high yield aluminum oxide technology specifically tailored for fluoride removal from drinking water supplies.

Reduce arsenic and nitrates. Remove glyphosate herbicide, linked with cancer.

Reducing fluoride by up to 95%

The Berkey Fluoride Filter helps reduce fluoride exposure in drinking water supplies. Fluoride is deliberately added to many municipal supplies, and has become more controversial over time due to studies showing its harmful health effects. Black Berkey purification elements have proven successful at eliminating many contaminants, including fluoride and arsenic; however, overtime they begin missing fluoride completely, necessitating additional fluoride reduction filters for maximum efficiency.

Fluoride and arsenic reduction filters are an easy-to-use addition to the Black Berkey water filtration system. They’re designed to fit onto either end of the Black Berkey filter and sit comfortably in its lower chamber; additionally they may also help adsorb Glyphosate herbicide that has been linked with cancer.

PF-2 fluoride and arsenic reduction elements are made of non-leaching Polypropylene #5. With their lifetime replacement warranty and availability for various Black Berkey Water filter systems sizes, these elements come highly recommended.

Activated carbon

Activated carbon is an essential ingredient in a Berkey water filter because it has the ability to remove fluoride from drinking water. The granular material has thousands of microscopic pores that can trap bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, and other contaminants. Its unique structure also makes it capable of adsorbing fluoride from liquids without dissolving them.

The PF-2 fluoride reduction elements are available as a set of 2 for use with Big Berkey, Travel Berkey, and other Black Berkey filters. They are designed to reduce the amount of fluoride in drinking water, and they are rated to last for up to 6,000 gallons per set.

The PF-2 fluoride reduction elements also contain catalytic activated coconut shell carbon and KDF media, which are known to remove over 200 other contaminants from drinking water. These include PFOS, PFOA, pesticides, chlorine and chloramine, copper, lead, herbicides, and more. These toxins are typically found in industrial and agricultural runoff, as well as from pharmaceutical residues, which can be carried into drinking water sources by animals or humans.

Ion exchange resins

Ion exchange resins are an efficient solution for water treatment as they can remove contaminants like copper, lead and cadmium from the environment. Constructed of polymers, when immersed into water they swell up and absorb ions present before replacing them with neutral ones such as sodium or potassium to restore equilibrium and recharge their resins via washing with solutions containing large amounts of salt.

Ion exchange works through resin’s functional groups that contain positive or negative charges, fixed within its polymer matrix. They then bond with counterion solution until equilibrium has been achieved.

In this study, two types of ion exchange resin were utilized: an acid cation exchange resin with tertiary ammonium functionality (Toray TIN-200 from New York, NY) and a zirconium loaded iminodiacetate chelating resin (Zinccar). Both resins were dried prior to being utilized.

Stainless steel

Berkey water filters remove various chemicals and organic particles from drinking water, including fluoride – often added to municipal drinking water in an attempt to combat tooth decay – while naturally present. Fluoride has no role in human nutrition; to enhance your Berkey’s effectiveness in filtering out fluoride use PF-2 Fluoride Reduction Filters as additional defense against its presence.

These elements are compatible with all stainless steel Berkey systems and will lower fluoride to an acceptable level, while also decreasing arsenic – an element commonly found in municipal drinking supplies.

Two PF-2 elements can purify up to 1,000 gallons of water at once and come with a six-month warranty. Their unique adsorption process attracts water molecules onto their surfaces before being trapped by filter structures in order to purify your drinking water supply.
